Gotokuji temple (1480~) is famous for a photo spot of “Manekineko” as lucky charm in Setagaya residential district. The Gotokuji and Manekineko story started when a cat invited the lord to the temple on his way back from falconry.

This area, which was home to a castle and magistrate’s mansion during the Edo period, has a lot of historical interest. There is a local temple where many cats are dedicated because cats saved samurai from heavy rain by beckoning them, a shrine where Kanjin Sumo was held and where the sumo ring still exists today, castle ruins, magistrate’s mansion ruins, and there is Shoin Shrine, where Shoin Yoshida, who worked for Japan at the Edo periods, is enshrined. You can also see the school that Shoin Yoshida opened there.

In particular, Gotokuji Temple is not only famous as a cat temple, but the temple grounds are so beautiful that it has been selected as one of Setagaya’s top 100 views. Please enjoy not only the cats but also the beautiful garden and five-storied pagoda.
