Chu-sen method

Tenugui(手ぬぐい) is a Japanese traditional handy piece of fabric, always gorgeous Japanese patterns. It can be used in countless ways like a hand towel, fashion accessory, headwrap or head band, wrapping a gift, place mat, interior decoration and etc..

Historically Tenugui was created during Heian period, around thousand years ago, and originally considered luxury items, crafted from silk or fine cotton and hemp. However, as fabric production techniques evolved, Tenugui became far more affordable, and their real everyday uses were explored, creating in the Tenugui we see today.

If you want to experience Japanese culture, dyeing Tenugui will be a very valuable experience.
The dyeing technique that you can experience is a special hand-made technique that has continued since the Meiji era in Osaka local area called Chu-sen.

Activity information

Pick up at your hotel and travel to the Dyeing Tenugui class in Nihonbashi with your guide. You will learn the Historical Chu-sen dyeing and make your very own Tenugi.

  • Select your ideal Tenugui design from 7 pattern and colors
  • Learn the traditional dyeing method chu-sen
  • In order to dye the design of your choice in the color of your choice, make a bank with glue and pour the dye into it.
  • Wash it off speedily so that the excess dye and then dry

Duration of class: Basic Chu-sen class 60 to 90 min, Norioki to Chu-sen class 90 to 120 min

Additional information

  • Confirmation will be received within 72 hours of booking, subject to availability
  • Please wear suitable clothes to Tenugi dyeing. (Clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty)
  • An apron and gloves for the dyeing experience are prepared by the class
  • Remove all accessories to avoid scratching cloths and getting dirty
  • Child Age 6+, fee: same as adult
  • This tour/activity will have a maximum of 2 people
