If you wanted to go only middle of Afuri shrine(Shimosha), you can visit in all season.
If you want to try a place a little different from the most popular hiking places, Mount Oyama is an excellent choice.
The best season for the hiking is Autumn, Winter and beginning of Spring. (November to March)
Mt. Oyama is part of the Tanzawa-Oyama Quasi-National Park, featuring numerous hiking trails connecting ancient temples. These temples have attracted worshippers for centuries, and even today, many pilgrimages to them. Mount Oyama has the beautiful scenery from “Afuri Shimosha shrine(阿夫利神社) is famous for “Green Michelin Guide Japan 2 Stars ★★”. It is the perfect place for Tokyo visitors who want to enjoy Japan’s natural environment.
Mount Oyama is not as busy as Mount Takao but offers the same convenience and is a great way to enjoy a quiet day away from the business of the big city.
It’s only 50 minutes by train from Tokyo’s Shinjuku to Isehara station, then a 30-minute bus from Isehara to Oyama cable car station. Mt. Oyama is an excellent spot for both beginner and experienced hikers. The Oyama has a cable car to the middle of the mountain, where you can enjoy tea and the beautiful Sagami seaside from a café.

The area also has quite a reputation for culinary specialities based on tofu, making it an excellent choice for vegetarians searching for new cuisine.

Tour spots information
Head to Mount Oyama by Odakyu line and bus from Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. Mt. Oyama is 1,525 meters high. If you’re not into hiking, Mt. Oyama is easily ascendable using the mountain’s cable car.
Please select the way of the Afuri shrine from trekking or cable car when you make a reservation. Trekking has two levels for intermediate and advance course.
With a private guide just for your group, you’ll buckle up your boots at Oyama cable car station for a hike along the trails to the summit, where Mt. Fuji can be seen on a clear day. The route back down includes a stop at an onsen for a relaxing soak in a Japanese hot spring if you would like.

Additional information
The trails range from easy to quite hard, so let your guide know what you prefer. On the way up, your guide will offer explanations of the wildlife you encounter, the views, and the Buddhist and Shinto shrines and statues you’ll see along the way. You can stop for a breather or have a snack and a drink at any point along the trail.
- ・Middle of Mt. Oyama by cable car: (Level:Low)
- Walk around the shrine and rest at the mountain café. Back to Oyama station by cable car.
- Middle of Mt. Oyama by hiking:(Level Inter mediate)
- Walk one hour from Oyama cable car station. See the Afuri shrine and rest at Miharashi dai or Café next to Afuri Shrine.
- Head to the top of Mt. Oyama: (Level High)
- Take a cable car from Oyama station. From Afuri shrine station, the hike takes around 90-120 minutes. Rest at the mountain top and return to Afuri shrine thru the Miharashi dai taking about 60 minutes.
Arrival time to central Tokyo: Cable car course 15:00, Beginner hiking 16:00, Advance course 17:00
Option: Hot spring: There is a local hot spring. If you wanted to visit there, please check the following information.
- Tattoos (including covered tattoos) and intoxicated people are strictly prohibited from entering. If you can’t use the hot spring due to tattoos, we will try to reserve a private bath if available.
- Please bring your towel. (Towels are available for purchase.)
